After reading and watching Julie and Julia I had to buy the book that started it all! I have always loved Julia Child and watching her tv shows while growing up I learned a lot about cooking.

My life in France is a touching story about her life as collaborated by Julia Child with Alexa Prud’homme. It felt like we were right there with her on her journey to learn French cooking as well as starting from scratch to learn the French language. Also inside is some whimsical photos of her and her husband Paul that were taken of them as she sent them to her dear friend Avis.

A darling memoir about a very gifted genius in the kitchen.

ON THE FRIDAY MORNING BEFORE CHRISTMAS BREAK, TWISTING south on Highway 101 and engrossed in the soaring voice of k.d. lang singing perhaps the saddest love song Leonard Cohen ever wrote, Mira Serafino found herself thinking about the ropy hip muscles of a young man she'd slept with in college, shuddering in a way she hadn't in years.

Hello and welcome to my own little world! When I am writing I drift off into my own virtual secret garden. I started selling used books in 2003 when I realized at my entire attic was filled with all of the books I had read from the prior five years. At first I called it my “library” but then I decided to sell all of the books and use the money to buy myself more books so that I always keep them in circulation. Quite like the American Dollar. I am a virtual hub of books.

The book I am reading currently is called “Love and Biology at the Center of the Universe” by Jennie Shortage.

The book is about a woman that finds herself trying to get on with her life after she discovers that her husband is having an affair. Heading due North with little money and no real destination she finds her freedom at long last. I can relate to this book because I have felt alone and have been on my own a time or two without any real plan.

I purchased the book on sale for a dollar from Books a Million yesterday afternoon. Although I do love a good bargain book I dare say that I feel that the poor author is being raped by their almost giving the book away. I realize there are millions of books circulating currently but am not so suave as to say isn’t it a form of marketing blackmail? I enjoyed reading the book during my rainy Friday while sipping hot chocolate.

Powell became an Internet celebrity with her 2004 blog chronicling her yearlong odyssey of cooking every recipe in Julia Child's Mastering the Art of French Cooking. A frustrated secretary in New York City, Powell embarked on "the Julie/Julia project" to find a sense of direction, and both the cooking and the writing quickly became all-consuming. Some passages in the book are taken verbatim from the blog, but Powell expands on her experience and gives generous background about her personal life: her doting husband, wacky friends, evil co-workers. She also includes some comments from her "bleaders" (blog readers), who formed an enthusiastic support base. Powell never met Julia Child (who died last year), but the venerable chef's spirit is present throughout, and Powell imaginatively reconstructs episodes from Child's life in the 1940s. Her writing is feisty and unrestrained, especially as she details killing lobsters, tackling marrowbones and cooking late into the night. Occasionally the diarist instinct overwhelms the generally tight structure and Powell goes on unrelated tangents, but her voice is endearing enough that readers will quickly forgive such lapses. Both home cooks and devotees of Bridget Jones–style dishing will be caught up in Powell's funny, sharp-tongued but generous writing.

I just want to say I adore anything to do with travel so when I picked up this gem I felt as if I was in heaven.

Easy to read in one weekend because it is so good you don’t want to put it down. I liked it so much I rented the video after I finished it to see if anything was missing and I loved the movie even more than the book. Let’s just say I bought it and watched it four times this week.
